NEW YORK — The Food and Drug Administration says it confirmed three new cases of a potentially lethal brain inflammation linked to the multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri.

There have been 13 reported cases of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, or PML, since mid-2006. The reports are the first confirmed new cases since June. While the disease is rare, the FDA says the risk appears to increase as patients remain on Tysabri.

After the initial outbreak, people stopped talking so much about the swine flu. I guess everyone realized that, although it can be dangerous, it is just the flu. As long as your immune system isn’t compromised and you get medical attention if your fever goes too high, you’ll be just fine in a few days, like you would be with any other type of flu.

I have no idea why Kieran thinks that this Dara Ó Briain video would be my cup of tea. We all know that I am devoted to the ideal of communicative reason between respectful parties speaking in good faith. None of that tawdry mockery and whacking at people with sticks for me, no sir.

Nevertheless, it’s quite charming; perhaps it’s the Irish accent. Ó Briain studied math and theoretical physics at University College Dublin, where he was an officer of the Literary and Historical Society, where I spoke not too long ago . I cannot speculate where the fashion sense came from.

Swine flu as it is commonly called is caused by the H1N1 virus which is a very contagious and acute respiratory disease in pigs. It has now jumped over to humans and after first being diagnosed in Mexico has now spread around the world. The H1N1 virus has not been around long enough for extensive data to accumulate but it is pretty safe to assume that it spreads in the same way as any other flu virus.

The article says that “More than 2,000 students at Washington State University have come down withswine flu symptomsin just the first week of classes, school officials said Friday” (Emphasis mine).

Swine flusymptoms. What does that even mean? A runny nose? No doubt this information is based on self-reporting (like much of the “information” we have on the Swine Flu), which means that most of the students were probably hung over from the ‘first week of classes’ and reported these symptoms as potentially being the Swine Flu – because that’s what everyone is telling them it probably is.
