TUESDAY, Sept. 22 (HealthDay News) — With all the warnings and preparations, dire predictions and hastily ordered vaccines, could the growing worry about H1N1 swine flu prove more disruptive than the actual outbreak?
That notion is weighing on the minds of more than a few infectious-disease experts as the fall and winter flu season looms.
The swine flu pandemic could kill millions and cause anarchy in the world’s poorest nations unless £900m can be raised from rich countries to pay for vaccines and antiviral medicines, says a UN report leaked to the Observer.
The disclosure will provoke concerns that health officials will not be able to stem the growth of the worldwide H1N1 pandemic in developing countries. If the virus takes hold in the poorest nations, millions could die and the economies of fragile countries could be destroyed.
It seemed to come out of nowhere in April, when it was diagnosed in two unrelated children in California. But evidence from different studies appears to tie the novel influenza A H1N1 to the family of the 1918 Spanish flu virus, one of the deadliest of the modern era and blamed for the deaths of 20 million to 50 million people.
