NEW YORK — The Food and Drug Administration says it confirmed three new cases of a potentially lethal brain inflammation linked to the multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri.

There have been 13 reported cases of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, or PML, since mid-2006. The reports are the first confirmed new cases since June. While the disease is rare, the FDA says the risk appears to increase as patients remain on Tysabri.

Campus officials have confirmed that several UW-Platteville students are exhibiting symptoms of the H1N1 virus, but they stopped short of saying swine flu is here.

“I would hesitate to say they are confirmed cases [of swine flu],” said Special Assistant to the Chancellor Barb Daus. Though no blood work has been done to confirm the presence of swine flu in the students, UW-P is still treating them as though they have it.

At least a handful of Stoddard County residents have been confirmed this week to have Type A flu, according to Stoddard County Health Center Director Debbie Pleimling, R.N.

Until this week, Pleimling has had only one confirmed case of Type A flu reported to her since July 1, 2009. Since Monday, however, she has received word of at least five reported positive cases confirmed by local labs.

ORANGE COUNTY — Orange County Public Schools has confirmed its first case of swine flu for the new school year.

Parents received a reverse 911 call late Tuesday night from the principal at Timber Creek High School in Avalon Park.

School districts have prepared parents by urging them to send students to school with plenty of hand sanitizer when the school year began on Monday.

Three residents at St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children have been confirmed with the swine flu, also known as the H1N1 virus.

William Giermak, CEO of St. Mary’s, said the three residents, aged 10, 12 and 17, began to show signs of the flu last week. Norfolk health officials took samples on Friday and confirmed Monday afternoon that they had contracted the swine flu virus.
