Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. Swine flu viruses cause high levels of illness and low death rates in pigs. Swine influenza viruses may circulate among swine throughout the year, but most outbreaks occur during the late fall and winter months similar to outbreaks in humans. The classical swine flu virus (an influenza type A H1N1 virus) was first isolated from a pig in 1930.

In Russia, the first recorded case of death from swine flu, said director of the Institute of Virology behalf of Ivanovo, academician of Academy of Medical Sciences of Russia Dmitry Lvov in the program “Special Correspondent”.

According to him, a medical worker, recently arrived from Bulgaria, was admitted for treatment at a medical institution, where she worked. For two weeks, the state of the patient deteriorated and she was transferred to a Moscow hospital.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases released a new report today about the H1N1 vaccine and children.  The upshot of the report, according to NIAID Director Anthony Fauci, is that children 10-17 years old probably will need just one swine flu/H1N1 vaccine shot. Younger children may require two shots, probably three weeks apart.

Seeing as the country would collapse and the health care system would implode without our government, shouldn’t they be the first in line to get the H1N1 vaccine? Oddly, there is no mention that anyone in congress is going to get the vaccine.

Senate officials are holding internal planning exercises this week to prepare for a swine flu outbreak that could hobble congressional offices.

prompted me to convey our recent experience with an H1N1 outbreak at Central Wisconsin Center (CWC). Unfortunately, the state epidemiologist was not interested in studying it further so I pass it on to you since I think it is noteworthy.

CWC is a long-term care facility for people with developmental disabilities, home for approx. 275 people with approx. 800 staff. Serum 25-OHD has been monitored in virtually all residents for several years and patients supplemented with vitamin D.

If you shake an infected person’s hand, you can get those droplets on your own—then if you touch your face, you can give the virus entrée to your mucous membranes. Though this won’t be news to most of you, avoid touching your eyes nose or mouth, and wash your hands frequently with soap and water or a hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol are proven ways to cut your risk.

Microsoft hasn’t actually developed a panacea for H1N1, but the company does have a technology “vaccine” for both teachers and students affected by the flu virus. The software giant has responded to the call from the Department of Education issued to technology companies, asking for solutions designed to keep students and teachers connected even in scenarios in which they are quarantined because of H1N1. Microsoft pointed out that its Office Live Workspace provided “just what the doctor ordered” when it came down to ensuring that the learning process continued, despite the H1N1 outbreak. “We’re concerned for the students and families impacted by the H1N1 virus and understand this could be a difficult time for students worried about their health and that they could fall behind in their studies,” revealed Anthony Salcito, vice president of Worldwide Public Sector Education at Microsoft. “We are happy to be able to provide affordable and accessible technology solutions that educators and students can use to mitigate any disruptions in the classroom due to a possible outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus.” In this regard, Microsoft has set up a special web page, dedicated entirely to helping address the classroom challenge of H1N1. State Health Commissioner Judy Monroe, M.D. is urging Hoosiers to get the seasonal influenza (flu) vaccine now and to plan to get the 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine when it is offered in Indiana.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the 2009 H1N1 influenza A vaccines approved today underwent the same rigorous FDA manufacturing oversight, product quality testing, and lot release procedures that apply to seasonal influenza vaccines.

PickupPal is working with Effect Partners , the greening organization selected by Live Nation to analyze the carbon footprint of the tour and provide the band with recommendations on how to best offset all of the CO2 generated by the Tour.

There has been some press about the size of the U2 360 Tour, with the phenomenally extravagant stage and the carbon footprint that is caused by the shipment of the equipment all around the globe. The fact is the band plans to offset that and is already implementing measures to help reduce it as the Tour progresses, including the use of carpooling with PickupPal.
